ACT
The ACT is a standardized test used for undergraduate admittance into many colleges in the United States. The ACT test measures students’ ability in four specific areas: English (grammar), Mathematics, Reading, and Science. There is also an optional writing test.
Dr. Robb teaches students to excel in the English, Reading, Science, and Essay sections.
SAT
The SAT is a standardized test that many students take before applying to college. Most often, students take the SAT in their junior year. The SAT covers two areas: Math and English.
Dr. Robb prepares students for the English section as well as the Essay portion.
CHSEE & TACHS
Students who would like to attend a Catholic school on Long Island must take the CHSEE for admittance.
Students who would like to attend a Catholic school in one of the New York City boroughs must take the TACHS for admittance.
Dr. Robb has been teaching students to excel on the Catholic high school exams with many of her students earning scholarships.
COLLEGE ESSAYS
Students are required to write their college essay (sometimes personal statements) as part of their college application process. The college essay reveals information about students that is not seen in the quantitative data students need to send to colleges.
Unlike test scores and transcripts, the college admissions essay offers students a chance to showcase their personality or unique talents.
Dr. Robb uses a novel approach to glean from students their unique stories or talents to highlight in their essays.
ORTON-GILLINGHAM
The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.
Dr. Robb is Orton Gillingham (OG) trained at the Associate Level. Dr. Robb teaches reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and handwriting using the OG approach.
GRAMMAR
Most students do not learn basic grammar skills in school today. (It’s not their fault they do not know grammar!) Students who develop a solid foundation in grammar improve both their spoken and written communication skills.
Dr. Robb instructs students to understand grammar in a systematic approach with direct instruction.
WRITING
The writing process is a complex cognitive task that involves mastering numerous qualities.
Dr. Robb teaches students to develop their own writing voice, to reflect on their writing process, and to set goals.
